“It is impossible to teach emotional sensitivity otherwise than by creating an environment in which you can talk about your feelings – and let down your defences. Then the people around you can do it too.” 15-year-old boy, Hagaskóli school, Reykjavík.

Boys can find it hard to recognise and express their feelings. In my work at a youth centre I started a collaboration with boys, in which we work together on design and arts – and at the same time establish an environment for dialogue. Creative work opens the way for verbal and practical expression. Boys often display insecurity in circumstances where they should show sensitivity. And they often react badly to discussion of other emotions than anger or happiness. But what feelings lie in between?
